Police to deploy explosive detection devices in airports, seaports

The Commissioner of Police, Anti- Bomb Unit, Abdulmajid Ali, yesterday said the command has taken delivery of Explosive Detection Canine, EDC, to be deployed to all airports and seaports in the country.
Ali told journalists yesterday in Lagos at a briefing on his activities in 2013 that about 20 sniffer dogs were also in the command to be deployed to airports across the country.
He noted that the equipment and dogs were parts of the command’s strategies to improve on its operations nationwide, particularly for the centenary celebration, where foreign dignitaries were expected.
“Anytime from now, EDC will be deployed to all the airports, seaports and our strategic borders, because they increase security and enhance explosives detection capacity.
“That apart, they have expertise in conducting large scale sweeps of facilities that are used in airports, seaports and land borders. To this end, security will be maximised and consolidated in all these places.
“We also want to assure members of the public that the Explosive Ordinance Disposal, EOD, Command is fully prepared in 2014 to tackle any Improvise Explosives Device, IED, or explosive anywhere in the country,” Ali said.
The commissioner said in 2013, the command recovered demolished assorted description of IEDs, grenades, dynamites, detonators and rocket launchers in many parts of the country.
Ali added that the command also dismantled a bomb manufacturing factory located in Tudun Salamnanu Fadama Mada area of Bauchi State on February 19, 2013.
He said his officers and men were always proactive in securing many national and international events, including elections nationwide in collaboration with other security agencies.
The commissioner added that 320 officers underwent Basic EOD Training, while 200 others were trained in diverse spheres of their operations both locally and abroad.
